A brief History

In the 1980's a farm was established on Old Woodcocks Road - Warkworth breeding, raising and processing Pekin Ducklings under the name 'Mahurangi Ducklings'. The ducks quickly became popular, especially amongst the Asian population for their excellent flavour and skin quality-an important feature when ducks are being prepared in the 'barbecued' tradition.

In January 2001 the farm was purchased by Katie and Peter Mitchell - recently arrived from the England - Peter was returning to New Zealand after an absence of twenty six years. The farm was renamed HILL FOOT FARM and the Mitchell's set forth to re-establish the reputation of Mahurangi Ducklings under the new brand name THE MAHURANGI DUCK.

Changes for the better

The farm has undergone a huge up- grade during the time we have been here. All our ducks are bred and raised at the farm in loose - housed barns. This feature is very important to our Biosecurity and is virtually unavailable in any other part of the poultry industry. Processing of the ducks was being done at North Poultry in Whangarei, unfortunately the processing plant closed in 2007 and at present we are still looking at alternative sites to process our ducks. We have resource consent to put a processing plant in at the farm and so are looking at the possibility of further funding for this project. (please note the wholesale price list is not applicable at present as we are not processing our own ducks)

Quality and care

The ducks are hand fed twice a day and have a constant supply of fresh water. Laying ducks have their eggs collected, washed and packed every day. Fresh shavings are laid in the barns every day. The welfare of all the ducks is monitored daily and we are very proud to say that in August 2005 we were given our Notice of Registration by the New Zealand Food Safety Authority registering us operators of a successful Risk Management Programme.

Diversity in processing and supply

Keeping the farm at the standard we require to produce high quality, happy, healthy ducks is on-going, however we also strive to make sure that our product is available to all supermarkets, restaurants, and the local commumity who want to enjoy a high quality product at a readily available price.

Simply delicious!

The Mahurangi Pekin Duck is delicious to eat and can be prepared in a huge variety of ways, making it a perfect choice of meat at any time of the year. Duck eggs are wonderful for baking and can also be used for poaching, scrambling, boiling and are great to use in omelets and fritattas. Tried and tested recipes are available on request!
